Trees are pruned for several reasons: to develop a strong structure, to repair storm or disease damage, or to change their size or density. Keep in mind that any pruning cut directs the way a tree grows and that cannot be undone. Also remember that pruning is actually an open wound, if not done properly, it is an invitation to insects and diseases. A callus consisting of cambium tissue will eventually cover the injured site, if the branch is accurately cut at the collar, but this is a slow process. Trees are best pruned by an arborist.
